Medical Insurance
Private Medical Insurance is insurance to cover the costs of receiving private hospital treatment.
No policy will cover every possible private treatment cost. Cover for mental conditions, which in one form or another affect one person in four in Britain, is generally very restricted or excluded altogether, Other exclusions could be cosmetic surgery, treatment for infertility or normal pregnancy.
One other important exclusion is 'pre-existing conditions', that is, health problems you already have at the time you apply for insurance. A few Private Medical Insurance providers 'underwrite' these conditions. That means that they look at the likelihood of such conditions causing a claim, and either charge you a higher premium, or put special rules into your policy, such as refusing to cover any treatment related to the condition. Most providers use a 'moratorium' instead. How this typically works is that the provider refuses to pay for any treatment relating to the condition until two full years have gone by without your needing treatment for it. After that, the health problem is covered just like any other.
